Exposure to asbestos is an issue for all Australian. Inhalation of asbestos fibres can cause serious health problems such as: Mesothelioma, asbestosis, and lung cancer.
asbestos is a class one carcinogen with no safe level of exposure. Unfortunately Australia has some of the world’s highest number of asbestos related diseases (ARD), with the incidence of ARD predicted to increase.
It should be noted that medical examinations of a person recently exposed to asbestos cannot reveal the presence or absence of health problems related to the exposure. In particular, X-rays are inappropriate for incidental or brief exposures and may pose an additional risk.
Any form of asbestos should be either: removed in accordants with the NSW Occupational Health and Safety Act 2005. Or Encapsulated to seal any loose fibres from escaping in to the atmosphere.
